A Child With High Risk for Anisometropic Amblyopia
Pediatric Practice Case Study 1
A 3-year-old girl was referred to an ophthalmologist for evaluation by her pediatrician after failing her Enfant™ Pediatric VEP Vision Test.
On examination, the patient demonstrated 20/100 vision in the right eye and 20/30 vision in the left eye. Her eyes were straight and she had normal ocular motility.
The cycloplegic exam revealed minimal refractive error in the left eye but 3.25 diopters of astigmatism in the right eye.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Astigmatism right eye
High risk for anisometropic amblyopia right eye
It was unclear during the initial examination if the child had amblyopia. However, she had blurry vision in the right eye and had a significant amblyogenic risk factor. She was prescribed glasses to be worn full time and asked to return for a follow-up exam in five weeks to determine whether supplemental occlusion therapy was necessary.
The ophthalmologists report to the referring doctor stated, “I am very impressed that your screening machine (The Enfant™ Pediatric VEP Vision System) correctly suspected a problem. Detection and treatment at this early age should lead to and excellent visual prognosis.”
