Refractive Imbalance Causes Vision Loss
Pediatric Practice Case Study 4
A 3-year-old boy was referred to an ophthalmologist for evaluation by her pediatrician after failing his Enfant™ Pediatric VEP Vision Test.
On examination, the visual acuity measured 10/100 (20/200) in the right eye and 20/20 in the left eye without correction. Refraction showed an asymmetric prescription for farsightedness, moderately strong in the right eye, but trivial in the left eye. This prescription did not improve the vision in the child’s right eye. Ocular rotations were full and the eyes indeed were perfectly aligned. The remainder of the examination was unremarkable.
Diagnosis and Treatment
The boy’s refractive imbalance has caused profound visual loss in the right eye. He was prescribed glasses and asked that his left eye be patched half of his waking hours. Visual acuity was measured 2 months after this initial examination to check for improvement.
The ophthalmologists report to the referring doctor stated, “I told the mom that it was indeed fortunate that her son had successful vision screening at an early age.” Because of the early detection and treatment for this patient the prognosis is very good.
